Chapter 22

Dance of Intimacy

The following morning, he woke much earlier than her but was careful not to move for fear of disturbing her. He had gotten up once, around 2 a.m., to go to the washroom but she was sleeping deeply and did not so much as budge despite his movement. There was very little light in the room at the time, but his night vision was very sharp, and when he returned to the bed he just stood there admiring her. She lay mostly on her side, partly on her stomach, with one arm extended, stretched out above her, and the second tucked under her chin. She wore a short, white negligee that she had slipped into after they made love the second time and just before they both drifted off to sleep, somewhere around midnight. Her long hair lay atop her back, and he couldn’t help but notice that she appeared to be smiling, if ever so delicately.

He slept with a deep, satisfying feeling of exhaustion during the night, and woke up only that one time. It was a pleasant surprise to him when he opened his eyes in the morning to find he had slept sufficiently. He was often slow to come to in the morning and was seldom able to tell that he was rested until he got going for the day. But today was different. At some point before 6 a.m., he simply opened his eyes to discover that he was fully awake and felt completely rejuvenated. Making as little movement as possible, he bent over the side of the bed to check his watch, which was on the floor beside the bed. As tired as he had been, he was now fully rested with less than five and a half hours of sleep.

After checking the time he still didn’t get up. He returned to lying flat on his back, adjusting his position carefully so as not to disturb her, and lay quite still as he enjoyed the supreme silence of the room, save for the gentle sound of her breathing. His apartment and others he had rented over the years, by comparison, was seldom quiet. He had grown used to the constant sounds of the streets bombarding him, and was only now realizing that he rarely ever knew complete quiet. But Andrea’s place was unusually peaceful. She lay on her pillow, just inches from his ear, sleeping peacefully and breathing deeply. He listened to the hypnotic, gentle rhythm of her breathing as he stared at the ceiling, drifting in and out of that place one experiences when they are awake but are still on the verge of sleep. He turned his head slowly to look at her and was taken by the exquisite, peaceful form lying next to him. It seemed that she had not so much as moved from the time he last observed her hours ago. She still had the hint of a smile on her face, and it felt wonderful to be lying beside her.
